PPF Maintenance: How to Wash and Care for Your Car After Installation

Keeping a Car clean can feel demanding because dust and surface marks show easily. Paint protection film can make maintenance easier, but it still needs proper care. At Turtlewax Tellapur, we recommend a gentle cleaning routine to maintain your PPF’s appearance and performance.

Allow the Film to Settle

Follow your installer’s instructions before the first wash. Waiting periods vary by product, commonly starting at 48 hours. Do not pick at edges or press installation bubbles yourself; contact your installer if anything concerns you.

Wash with Water and Automotive Shampoo

Wash approximately every two weeks, or sooner when necessary. Begin by rinsing away loose dirt with clean water. Use a PPF-compatible, pH-neutral automotive shampoo at its recommended dilution.

Foam helps loosen dirt, but foam alone may not remove every contaminant. Where contact washing is needed, use a clean microfiber wash mitt with gentle movements. Keep separate wash and rinse buckets, and use separate tools for wheels.

Wash in shade on cool panels, and never allow shampoo to dry on the surface.

Use Your Pressure Washer Carefully

Avoid directing concentrated jets at film edges or seams. Follow the film manufacturer’s pressure-washing guidance; STEK specifies at least 36 inches between the nozzle and film. Excessive pressure close to edges can cause lifting.

Dry with Clean Microfiber Towels

Use a soft, absorbent microfiber drying towel. A 1200 GSM towel can work well, but cleanliness and gentle handling matter more than thickness alone.

Blot or glide lightly without scrubbing. Dry promptly to reduce mineral water spots, especially when using hard water. Keep towels free from grit and wash them without fabric softener.

Avoid Daily Dry Dusting

Do not assume a wax-coated duster makes dusty PPF safe to wipe. Trapped grit can leave marks. Prefer rinsing and washing; for very light dust, use a manufacturer-approved lubricated cleaning method.

Remove bird droppings and insects promptly. Soften deposits before gently cleaning—never scrape them off.

Schedule Professional PPF Maintenance

Choose a detailing outlet that uses film-compatible products, clean towels and careful hand-washing methods. A “premium” label alone does not guarantee safe care. Avoid abrasive brushes and unapproved polishing compounds.

Ask professionals to inspect edges, assess stubborn stains and follow your film’s maintenance schedule. Keep service records where required.
