When it comes to keeping a car comfortable and protecting what is inside it, not all sun films are equal. The gap between a proper heat-rejection film and the cheapest roll on the market is far wider than the price difference suggests — and you feel it every time you get into the car at 3pm in May.
In India, window film must meet the visual light transmission limits in Rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules — 70% VLT for the front and rear windscreen, 50% for the side windows. A film can be excellent and still be illegal if it is too dark. Always ask for the VLT rating in writing before anything goes on your glass.
Superior heat rejection
The main advantage of a heat-rejection film is its ability to block solar energy rather than merely darken the glass. Quality films use a metallised or ceramic layer that reflects infrared radiation — the part of sunlight you feel as heat — while staying optically clear.

With real heat rejection you get into a car that is measurably cooler after it has been parked. The cabin reaches a comfortable temperature faster, and it holds that temperature instead of climbing again the moment you stop at a light.
In Hyderabad this is the difference people actually notice. A car parked outdoors between 11am and 4pm builds up serious cabin heat, and a good film is the single cheapest way to reduce it.
Protection for your interior
Prolonged sun exposure does real damage inside a car. UV fades upholstery, cracks dashboards and dries out leather until it splits along the seams — and unlike paint, an interior cannot be polished back.
Quality films block up to 99% of UV radiation, which preserves the condition of the cabin and everything in it. Cheap films rarely carry meaningful UV rejection at all, so the interior keeps ageing behind glass that only looks protective.

A cooler cabin means the AC has less work to do. The compressor cycles less, which reduces load on the engine or, in an EV, on the battery. Over years of ownership that is a small but real saving, and it takes wear off the AC system itself.
With a cheap film the air conditioning runs harder for longer to reach the same cabin temperature, and it never quite gets ahead of the heat soaking in through the glass.
Better visibility and safety
Glare is a genuine hazard, particularly on the Outer Ring Road at sunrise and sunset when the sun sits low and directly ahead. A good film cuts glare without over-darkening, so you see more rather than less.
This is exactly where the legal limits and good practice align: a compliant 70% VLT front windscreen film reduces glare and heat while keeping night-time visibility safe. Very dark film does the opposite after sunset, which is precisely why the rules exist.
Appearance that lasts
Beyond function, a properly fitted film gives the glass an even, factory-quality finish. The failure mode of cheap film is familiar to everyone: bubbling within a season, purple discolouration as the dye breaks down, and edges that lift and peel.
A quality film holds its colour and stays flat for its warranty period. As with paint protection film, most of what separates a good result from a bad one is preparation and fitting — glass has to be genuinely clean, and the film has to be shrunk and laid without contamination underneath.

How to compare films properly
Two numbers do most of the work when you are comparing quotes:
- VLT (Visual Light Transmission) — how much visible light passes through. This is the number that determines whether the film is road legal.
- TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejected) — how much total solar energy the film blocks. This is the number that determines whether the car is actually cooler.
A film can have a low VLT (very dark) and poor TSER (barely cooler) at the same time — that combination is exactly what cheap dyed film delivers, and it is both uncomfortable and illegal. Conversely a clear-looking 70% VLT ceramic film can reject a great deal of heat while remaining fully compliant.
Ask for both figures in writing, and ask what the warranty covers and for how long.
